Publisher Side - Specifying creative to different same size ad containers on one page

This article will discuss specifying which creative will run in different same-sized ad containers on a single publisher’s webpage.

Alert
Please note XM AdOps does not control this!
The publisher will need to complete on their end and placements will need to be built correctly by XM

Warning
Depending on which ad server the publisher is using, it may or not be possible for the same size ad to appear in specific spots on the same webpage.

Google Ad Manager & Ad Slots

If using Google Ad Manager (GAM) it is possible to run multiple same-size ads on one page in different ‘ad slots’.

Overview

For multiple ad slots of the same size that need to show different content, the publisher can define ad units with incremental sizes.  The publisher should use the strategy below when you have multiple ad slots of the same size on a single page and want to place specific creatives in a defined order down the page.

Example: you have three 300x250 ad slots on the right side of the webpage.  XM's client does not want the same creative to be in all 3 spots.  They want to have specific creative in slot 1, a different one in slot 2 and another different creative in slot 3.

PUBLISHER How to

The below is specifically for the publisher to do.  XM will cannot do these steps.

Information can be found here: https://support.google.com/admanager/answer/4430844?hl=en

1. Set up ad units with incremental sizes
    1. To control the order of creatives, set up ad units that have both their actual sizes and incrementally bigger sizes.
      1. For example, for the three sequential 300x250-pixel ad slots, set up the following ad units and sizes:

Ad unit 1: 300x250

Ad unit 2: 300x250, 300x251

Ad unit 3: 300x250, 300x252
    1. Each ad unit will have its actual size, and the sequentially placed ad units also include an incrementally larger size. By including both sizes, you set up the ad units so that they can receive both sequential and non-sequential creatives.
    1. For each ad slot on the page, upload a separate creative of the same size, as a single creative generally serves only once per ad request.

2. Traffic the line item(s)
    1. Create a line item that targets all of the sequential sizes (e.g., 300x250, 300x251, 300x252).

    2. Target creatives to specific slots: Associate your creatives with the line item and target each one to a specific ad unit size. For example, a creative targeted to 300x251 will only serve in that slot.

    3. Update GPT tags (Google Publisher Tag): In your website's Google Publisher Tag (GPT) code, ensure the tags for each ad slot include the incremental sizes you defined.
      1. Define the ad slot sizes in your tags with Google Publisher Tag (GPT)

    4. You must specify in your tags which creative sizes can serve to each ad slot.

XM How to

  1. Builders
    1. Fill out the placement builders as usual to reserve the inventory via io and create the line in the ad server.
    2. You will not request the incremental sizes listed above.  That is used for GAM to be able to identify the ad slots
      1. There should be 1 placement per ad slot.
      2. There should be an indicator of the ad slot name within the product purchased from the publisher.
        1. This should be discussed prior to builds.
  2. Trafficking
    1. Populate the trafficking sheet with the placement and the specific creative that should be assigned to the ad slot
      1. The client's team should tell you which creative goes to which ad slot
    2. AdOps will assign the creative per the instructions provided on the tsheet
    3. The Publisher will apply the ad tags they receive to the exact ad slots because of the identification in the placement names.
