What are default ads and default creatives?

Default ads are ads created by Google’s Campaign Manager 360 when AdOps uploads a display or in-stream creative for a placement for the first time. CM360 will then automatically create default ads for every placement with the same type, size, duration, and orientation of the default ad.

These ads will ensure that there will always be a creative available to show should the intended ads fail to load. An ad can fail to load if the user’s browser does not support the creative’s format or if they are located outside of the placement's targeting. Default ads will also take over if the intended ad has reached its end date or hit its impression goals.

Default creatives are the assets that are assigned to the default ads. These should be branding ads that do not feature any offer or special, as the default ad is a safety net in case the intentional ad cannot play.  AdOps can only assign one creative to a default ad per dimension.

You can see the default ads and creatives assigned to the placements of a campaign. A different default ad will exist for each different set of dimensions and will appear alongside the intended ads after the intended ads have been trafficked.

Any 3p served placements must have default ads and creatives assigned or AdOps will not be able to pull ad tags.
